SEF History and Milestones 

Fall 1980

Community wide meeting called by SUSD Board identifies arts and science as curriculum needs

1980 - 81

Arts and Science committee meets and refines program recommendations. Response from School Board :  sounds great but no money available

March 1982

Ann Danner hired to facilitate forming a Foundation.

September 1982

Saratoga Education Founda1ion incorporated. Signers of incorporation were Bob Peterson, Nan Swanson, Marty Northrup, Betsy Bryant and Charlie Ludeman

November 82 -May 83

Funds raised by direct personal solicitation and a grant from the Whitney Education Foundation (written by Mary Gardner)

August 1983

Campaign receipts total $45,000 and fund 4-6th grade science ($30,700), Redwood Science ($2000) and Transportation to ICT ($1500)

March 1984

Mini Grants awarded ($2000)

April - May 1984

Phone-A-Thon reminder campaign at Cornish and Carey

December 1985

$100,000 check donated to SUSD.  These funds were absorbed into the General Fund and used for basic programs and to keep class sizes small.

Over the next few years enthusiasm, support and donations waned.

Fall 1987

The State of California held tax funds, which by law they could not spend and were "rebated" back to the tax payers.  A joint committee was formed to publicize the needs of the local schools and to encourage donating the rebates to education

March 1988

Stephanie Petrossi and a group of parents attend the California Consortium of Education Foundation's conference and pledge to revive SEF

November 1988

First Telethon broadcast on Channel 6 from West Valley College while volunteers called from real estate offices.  Telethons were also held in 1989 and 1990

April 1989

Grocery Certificate program started by Sue Massielto

June 1989

The SEF logo, designed by Diane Lindow, grows legs.  Stephanie Petrossi produces a publication thanking our donors and later it becomes our annual report, the "Outlook"

September 1989

Mini Grants are awarded to' teachers

October 1989

A Community Hand book with information on SEF and school calendar is distributed to each school family

Fall 1989

Records first kept on a computer by Beth Rollins

January 1991

Major Grant Policy negotiated with SUSD and adopted by SEF

June 1991

Parcel Tax measure A fails

Fall 1991

First edition of the Flash, which is distributed with the school newsletter, is published by Beth Rollins. 

Major fund raising activities by SEF are suspended so that all volunteer efforts can be concentrated on a second Parcel Tax

April 1992

Parcel Tax fails and SEF fund raising campaign is extended through the summer

September 1992

Gift-wrap fundraiser first held and coordinated by Julia Peck. First SEF reference card is introduced and replaces the SEF handbook

November 1992

Partners in Education is formed to link local business and schools

Winter 1992-93

Guidelines developed by SUSD designate SEF as the recipient of all major cash donations to the District

February 1993

Phone-A-Thon as we know it now is held at Western Microtechnology

April 1993

Jog-A-Thon at Redwood is initiated by Julia Peck and Mary Hollenhorst.

May 1993

A reception is held to honor major donors and Partners in Education.  Saratoga National Bank underwrites the event.

September 1993

The grand total of one million dollars has now been donated to SUSD by SEF.

January 1994

Endowment Policy adopted.

February 1994

Timeline for the major grant is adjusted to ensure that funding occurs in May of each year.

March 1994

SEF Business Alliance team commences a series of breakfasts to support technology in the schools.  Organized by Frank Florence and Bruce Euler.

August 1994

First Golf Tournament organized by Jerry Houston

December 1995

Revised SEF's major grant policies by requesting SUSD outline program objectives for a complete program.  SEF Board Members  met with Principals to discuss how these objectives have been met to improve accountability.

Janusry1998

SEF Board meets With Principals, School Site Presidents, Superintendent and School Board to discuss funding possibilities for major grant.

February 1996

SEF Board uses program evaluation work sheets to evaluate SEF funded programs.

April 1996

By-laws updated.

May 1996

Reception at District Office to honor partners and major donors.

March 1997

Jog-A-Thon canceled to increase volunteer time to support Measure D, the School construction Bond.

April 1997

Partners in Education program redefined, set up Business Sponsors Program, SEF Board voted to establish a new VP of Development position to focus on major donors.

June 1997

Measure D passes for SUSD.

Nov-Dec 1997

Mini Phon-A-thon/major donor contact.

June 1997

Brian Berg creates SEF web site and creates email aliases.

February 1998

Added used car sales program with St. Vincent de Paul.

May 1998

Major Donor reception at Hakone Gardens.

June 1998

High School Measure B passed.

October 1998

First major donor kickoff fundraising event at the Finocchios.

November 1998

$92,000 received from the September letter.

Fall 1999

$100,000 donation received designated for the endowment.

May 2000

Co-presidency initiated with overlapping 2 year terms:  Cathie Thermond stayed on for 2nd year of presidency and Mimi Thomas started first year of 2 year term in June.

June 2001

Terminated paper scrip program because all major stores had dropped out.  Focus changed to e-scrip.

August 2001

SUSD becomes a Basic Aid District for the 2000-2001 school year

September 2001

First speaker event:  Dean Stipek of Stanford Dept. of Education.

September 2001

Implemented Leadership Circle for donors who donate $700 per child and Scholar's Circle for families who donate $5,000 or more.

March 2002

Measure L passed - additional funding to finish work started with Measure D.

May 2002

Leadership and Scholar's Circle reception at Mark and Terrie Creamer's house. Margie Alejandro and the 5th grade choir performed.

November 2002

Speaker event: Dr. Elliot Eisner,  Professor of Education and Art at Stanford University.

November 2002

Shinku Sharma organizes first Program Observation Day at Saratoga School, which highlighted SEF funded programs.

January 2003

Met with School Board and school leaders to talk about how to handle state budget cuts.

February 2003

Parent survey on SEF programs and direction of funding.

November 2003

Speaker Event:  Assemblyman Joe Simitian

March 2003

California School Budget crisis, SUSD faced with teacher layoffs and larger class sizes.

April 2003

New superintendent Lane Weiss hired to start in summer.

April 2003

Sent out special appeal for donations to be used for Class Size reduction and to retain teachers. A total of $240,000 donated and resulted in leveraging eleven teachers by maintaining class size reduction funding.  

May 2003

With Madeline Morrow and Shinku Sharma as Presidents, SEF granted to SUSD $1,160,000.  First time grant to SUSD was over one million dollars. Leadership and Scholar Circle reception at Cooper-Garrod Winery.

May 2004

Granted $1,125,000 to SUSD. Funded Visual and Theatre arts and hands on standards based science delivered by Lawrence Hall of Science and California Academy of Science. Funded 2 Counselors at Redwood and PowerSchool, a student information system for tracking attendance, scheduling and assessment information.

May 2004

Leadership and Scholar Circle  reception at Cooper-Garrod Winery

May 2005

Cindy Zuccarino organized Scramble for SEF golf tournament held at Stanford Golf Course. Mark Linsky created a new program called, Realtors for Saratoga Schools- Making a Move for Education.

May 2005

Granted $1,111,500 to SUSD. Created board positions to focus on parents new to the district and to SUSD alumni.

July 2005

Anne Veis develops a targeted communications campaign with special communications for various stakeholders: New SUSD families, elementary parents, Redwood parents, alumni

August 2005

SEF grant to SUSD includes a new position called Program Coordinator, Class Size Reduction at Redwood and a Study Skills/Tutorial Elective.

August 2005

Faithe Liu is hired as Program Coordinator.   The role of the Program Coordinator is to support staff with the implementation and coordination of SEF funded programs

August 2005

SEF By-laws amended to allow the President to serve two consecutive 2 year terms. Terrie Creamer started her third year as President/ Co-President. By-laws and SEF History scanned and converted to a PDF file.

November 2005

Long time SEF supporter, Dr. Dutra , leaves SEF $186,000 as part of his estate.

December 2005

Jennifer Robert heads up communication program for SUSD alumni and Jacki Berlinberg heads program for new parents. Deborah Fong heads up Asian market script program.

March 2006

Despite three delays due to rain, Redwood jogathon lead by Patti Workman raises over $67,000.

April 2006

SEF grants $1,055,613 to the district. Grant includes a grades K-5 counselor.

May 2006

Second Scramble for SEF is held at Stanford Golf Course.

May 2006

Leadership Event held at Cooper-Garrod Winery.

June 2006

Treasurer Lisa Lau initiates an audit and forms Investment Advisory Committee.

August 2006

Shirley Chen performs audit and John Moriarty leads the Investment Advisory Committee.

September 2006

Mark Linsky leads a team to create Business Card directory program where local businesses and realtors have their business cards in school directories.

There are no paid employees in SEF.


The SEF board is made up of approximately 55 parents from all four SUSD schools.



For the 2006-07  school year, our administrative and fundraising expenses was 3.3% of our income.
